Domestic Wood Pellet Heating Systems

An Implementation Plan for Ireland

Since the last years a lot of experience for production, use and marketing of pellets was gained in Styria. So the LandesEnergieVerein was invited to participate in the project to transfer the existing know-how. The project was started by the Tipperary Energy Agency in Clonmel, Tipperary, a SAVE-Agency, in the founding of which the LEV was involved. The LEV could act as intermediary for Styrian companies, that wish to gain a foothold on the newly established pellet market in Ireland. Further the LEV organises participation in the project for these companies.

In Ireland wood currently provides 1% of the Total Primary Energy Requirement. This is mainly used in the domestic and wood processing industry. While there has been an increased move towards the installation of fossil fuel based central heating systems there has also been a dramatic increase in the sale of wood stoves in Ireland. As wood pellet heating systems can be provided in both stand-alone and central heating systems it would indicate that there is potential for development of a pellet- market. In addition, there is an excess of residue material from the wood processing industry, which could be captured and used to produce pellets.

The project sought to identify the suppliers of wood pellets and wood pellet heating systems in the EU and North America and to identify a number of suppliers who would be willing to provide heating systems and pellets into the Irish Market. 6 sites were identified in 2 target areas (Co. Donegal and Co. Tipperary) with a view to funding the installation of these heating systems and the demonstration of wood pellet heating in Ireland.

The following actions have been completed:
  • Review and compilation of wood pellet heating system suppliers.
  • Review and compilation of wood pellet producers in EU.
  • Production of a database of the above information.
  • Identification of a number of equipment suppliers and pellet producers who may supply to the Irish Market.
  • Identification of 12 potential sites for wood pellet heating systems.

In Summer 2001 a partners meeting was hold in Graz, Austria accompanied by a study tour. Irish partners visited the following sites:

KWB - KRAFT UND WÄRME AUS BIOMASSE GMBH
A-8321 St. Margarethen/Raab 235 www.kwb.at
Heating-system producer

Holzindustrie Leitinger GesellschaftmbH
A-8551 Wernersdorf 57

Pellets production
Stadlober Karl
Judenburgerstraße 5

Wood Pellet Delivery
Further actions:
  • Attendance at European conference on wood pellets.
  • Attendance at Danish wood energy study tour.
  • Dissemination of information on project via various avenues and actions.

At a second partners meeting in March 2002 in Ireland the partners reviewed progress to date, completed site visits to the potential sites, identified the potential aspects of the development plan and addressed the funding of installation of the selected systems. Finally the six potential sites and the pellet heating equipment to be installed were selected.

In addition, the project stimulated the development of the wood pellet industry in Ireland by the production of a development plan. This was assisted by the Cluster partners and also done in conjunction with COFORD, the National Council for Forestry Research and Development.

The project was completed on time. Strong links have been made with the other Cluster partners and discussions were held, how to continue beyond the life of the project - particularly in relation to the development and maintenance of the databases developed.

In September 2002 this project, co-financed in the EU-Programme ALTENER II, was finished.
